Learning at Paeroa College

Paeroa College offers a vibrant, exciting and student centred learning environment. We are proud of our school and work hard to ensure positive outcomes for our learners.

Our school has a strong and caring culture that values academic and personal excellence, the centrality of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, cultural diversity, contribution to the community, innovation and a curriculum that focuses on our learners and what they need to succeed. Our students learn through an innovative student-centred curriculum that includes a focus on individual mentoring and student agency. We recognise Te Reo Māori as an official language of Aotearoa/New Zealand by ensuring that a Rumaki Reo full immersion option is available at years 9 and 10.

Our students are proud of their school. This pride is reflected in the welcoming atmosphere and the beautifully maintained buildings and grounds. The school provides an attractive teaching and learning environment. It has a proven history of academic, sporting and cultural excellence. Our school features several unique, purpose built learning environments including excellent technology, arts, drama and music facilities.  In addition to traditional subjects, we have innovative programmes including our nationally recognised Te ara Tapu a Tane boys group, classes in sustainability, video game creation and horticulture. Our Academy programme includes opportunities to learn in a commercial kitchen, experience outdoor adventure learning and engage in an extremely well-developed work experience programme.

Paeroa College is committed to fostering relationships, policies and practices that reflect New Zealand’s cultural diversity and the unique position of Māori as tangata whenua. With a school role that is approximately 44% Māori, Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga is embedded as everyday practice in classroom and co-curricular activities. The Paeroa College curriculum is designed to integrate our students’ identity, language and culture into the life of the school and promote high expectations of Māori students to succeed in education as Māori. We work hard to develop reciprocal relationships that promote cultural inclusion and are focused on transformative educational outcomes.

Other Learning Opportunities

Paeroa College is really proud to offer our students a huge variety of learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom.  Students experience a number of camps, a huge range of sporting activities, ski trips, overseas sports and study tours.  We are focused on developing students as a whole person, providing them with a sense of belonging and place to call their own.

Our size allows us to cater to the individual learning needs of all of our students.

Growing leadership potential within our students occurs at all year levels. We enjoy celebrating the success of our students and encourage them to continually push themselves to achieve more than they think they are capable of.

Pathways

Our Pathways programme is very strong and operates with huge support from our community.   Through Gateway, our students are able to experience a variety of work-based learning experiences. We are continually extending our Gateway programme and encourage you to contact Denise Grimmer if you would like to have a student at your workplace. We also offer students Secondary-tertiary partnerships through Wintec. There are Trades Academy courses in a range of areas including Hospitality, Beauty, Building, Engineering and Tikanga.
